Why Test Your Home for Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. You can’t see or smell it, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says testing is the only way to know your level.

  • A leading cause of lung cancer – EPA calls radon the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and the number one cause among people who have never smoked, responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths a year.
  • Every home should be tested – EPA recommends testing all homes for radon.
  • The level to act on – EPA says to fix your home if the radon level is 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher, and to consider fixing between 2 and 4 pCi/L.

Radon around Cookeville

On EPA’s Map of Radon Zones, Putnam County is Zone 2, moderate potential: a predicted average indoor screening level between 2 and 4 pCi/L. White, Warren, DeKalb and Van Buren counties are Zone 2 as well, and Cumberland County is Zone 3. EPA notes that the zone map shouldn’t decide whether a home gets tested: all homes should be tested, regardless of zone.
